This month, we take a closer look at a new workshop aimed at encouraging more women to take up fly fishing.

Leigh Johnson, with the help of the Kapiti Fly Fishing Club and Fish & Game, kicked off the Women on the Fly workshop in Wellington last month that saw 28 women sign up for a weekend-long session to arm themselves with the skills, confidence, and knowledge required for flyfishing. 

Johnson drew on her business nous to project-manage the event, which involved successfully applying for an underwriting grant from Wellington Fish & Game, arranging guest speakers and presenters, and door-knocking potential sponsors. A key aspect was to bring in experienced female fly fishers to share their skills and experience.

In other news, a new legislation will enable firearm licence holders to continue to lawfully possess and use firearms while their application for a licence is being processed, a new study stated that the overall state of NZ’s wetlands has declined due to multiple pressures including land conversion, pollution, and climate change, and daily limits for hāpuku and bass fisheries were lowered.
