In early October, the (then) government announced six new marine reserves in the South Island after a decade in making.

While the news was met with enthusiasm from the Green Party and conservation group Forest & Bird, it raised concerns among recreational fishers, who expressed that the process “lacked proper consultation”.

We take a deep dive into the issue in our front-page story this month.

In other news, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council has launched QR codes at 18 boat ramps across the region to safeguard the region’s lakes from invasive pests.
